Oozing Cool

Hello, Deb here. I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the ridiculousness of the Meatpacking District in New York. According to some maps we live in the MPD and according to all maps I work in the MPD. Essentially, I spend all of waking and sleeping hours in the hippest neighborhood in the trendiest city in the entire country. Needless to say, I don’t always blend in very well.

The Meatpacking District is a very small neighborhood in New York that consists entirely of trendy bars, restaurants, clubs and meat packers. When I stumble to work in the morning across the uneven cobblestones, the neighborhood reeks of meat. When I leave work in the evening, I stumble across hipsters drinking $15 Grey Goose and Tonics who reek of coolness.

The crown jewel of the Meatpacking District is the Hotel Gansevoort. (Lija McBride is staying there this week for work.) It’s where the likes of Lindsay Lohan stay when they visit New York. I walk by the Hotel Gansevoort and through the Meatpacking District every day on my way to and from work. The walk this week has been extra celeb-packed due to the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards in New York. Just today, I saw Christian Slater and someone else I should have recognized coming out of the Gansevoort. Given the recent high density of celebrities, the paparazzi are in the neighborhood in droves to take pictures of the Gansevoort guests. Be sure to look for me in a red-striped shirt in the background of a shot of Christian Slater in the next US Weekly.

Why all this focus on trends and celebrities? Well, tomorrow night Elliott, Lija and I are going to the MTV Video Music Award after party (as guests of our friend Laura who works at Virgin Mobile). I have no idea what to expect, but the fact that the party is “hosted” by Gnarles Barkley should give me some kind of clue. The event doesn’t even start until after my bed time, so it should be interesting to see how long we last. We’ll probably be 3% as cool as most of the people there, but it should still be really fun! I promise to write about our VMA escapades very soon.
